DEPARTURE FROM CIIRISTCHUECH. The popularity which his Excellencv the Governor and Lady Ranfurly have <*ained in Christchurch was shown by the fact that a considerable number of people assembled at tho railway station yesterdav afternoon to bid farewell to them on thendeparture for Wellington. His Excellency and the Countess were accompanied in the carriage reserved for them on the' 4 r> m train, by Colonel Pole-Penton, the Hon W* C. Walker, Minister of Education, Captains Alexander and Ward and the Hon C. Hill Trevor. A VALEDICTORY LETTER. His Excellency the GovernoT, before his departure from Christcburch, forwarded the following letter to his Worship the Mayor :— " I should be much obliged if you would express to the councillors and citizens of Christchurch my thanks for their warm welcome, and for their invariable courtesy and kindness during my short visit to your city. I shall hope to spend some time in your midst when the occasion may offer. Th anting you for the part you have taken, — I am, &c, Ranfuelt." Yesterday afternoon his Excellency the Governor visited the Canterbury Museum. His Excellency Lord Ranfurly and the Countess arrived at Lyttelton by the 4.30 p.m. train and immediately embarked upon the Government steamer Tutanekai, which left Port at 5 p.m.
