CHRISTCHURCH AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB.

•ANNUAL MEETING.

The eighteenth annual meeting of the Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club was held last night, in St Michael's Schoolroom. About forty members were present, and the president, Mr G. Harris, occupied the chair.

The committee, in the annual report, congratulated the club on its success. There was a credit balance of .£1 13s lOd, which, considering the heavy expenses incurred in writing off the previous year's liabilities, was highly satisfactory, and a hearty vote of thanks was due to the honorary Treasurer for his work. The membership maintained its usual standard, notwithstanding the Ird'ge EAimber of resignations at the beginning of the season. The racing during the season had been of its usual merit 5 and the committee drew the members' attention to the fact that the monthly races were now free. The aquatic sports on Dec. 12 had gone off with their usual success. The annual races had been held on Feb. 27, and the manner in which they had been carried out stamped the meeting as probably the most successful ever, held. A record entry of sixty competitors for the Christchurch Handicap had been received. The annual quarter - mile, held on the Estuary on Jan. 17, had been keenly contested, and won by H. Fox. The club's representatives had won two of the New Zealand championships, viz., the 220 yds by W. J. Stratton, and the water polo by the club team. The win of the water polo event made this the fifth consecutive time the club had had the honour of holding the championship. During the season classes under the tuition of Messrs Stratton and I Smart had given exhibitions of life-saving, as taught by the Life Saving Society of England, at sports held in connection with the opening of the Eiccarton and Yaldhurst 1 baths; at Ashburton, and at the ■,club's sports. Four members — Messrs 1 Cook, Eaves, Sinclair and Smart — had passed an examination under the rules of the Life Saving Society before Mr fc trickland, an examiner from London. The ladies' branch continued to progress in a most decided manner, and several of its members had competed for the first time in inter-club events. A word of praise was due to the lady captain, Miss Campbell, for the painstaking manner in which she had carried out her duties. The committee thanked the lady members of the club generally for their kindness in dispensing afternoon tea at the sports meetings. The establishment of the Harris junior club competition had brought out a number of boys,. and the competition had been won by G. Fitzpatrick. The Training Committee wished to impress upon members, the urgent necessity for greater interest in racing and training. The committee thanked the President and Vice-Presidents for their generous gifts to the club's funds and the interest they had taken in the welfare of the club.

The balance-sheet showed that the receipts had been .£llO 10s lOd, including £o 2s lOd balance in hand at the beginning of the year ; expenditure, .£IOB 17s ; leaving a credit balance of dSI 13s lOd. The assets were .£5 0s 4d and the liabilities nil.

The report and balance - sheet were adopted.
