LEESTOiS v. RAKAIA,
These teams played their final games in the Ellesaiere Association tournament, at Luestou, on Wednesday, when the local player? clinched .their position as premiec^' of "the Ellesmere district, by aduwnis- 4 taring a crushing defeat to their Oppo-" nents. who, however, played two men short, in the • rst spell. The game ended in the homo team's favour by twenty-eight points (eight tries and a potted goal) to nil. Of the twenty-eight points'seorecl, twenty-five were obtained in the first spell, when Eakaia had not their full complement in the field. At half-time the visitors were allowed- to place two localmenin their team, andthefilling up of the vacant positions had a marked effect in equalising the play, and only one inori? try was secured by the local champions. The various scores were obtained by the following players :— Herron three tries and a potted goal (13), Ballagh two tries (6). John Eenm'e, H. Fine-ham-and E. Graham one try each; total, twentyeight to nil. Mr R. E. Brooke was referee. At the conclusion of the match, both teams were entertained at dinner at the Leecton Hotel.
The. team to represent Canterbury against Wellington on Saturday, -Sept. 4, will he picked on Tuesday evening, after training.' ' _^ J , ;: i . The annual football match.. Post and Telegraph v. Eaihvny, took plice yesterday at Lancaster Park, and resulted in a win for the former, the scores being Post and, Telegraph twelve points, Railway seven points. For the Post and Telegraph King scored two fries, Brooker converting one, and also kicking a goal ' from a mark. Gerard, Chambers, M 'Donald, Gray, Watts and Kodgers played well. For the Eailway Dansey, Thomas, Smith, West and Bailey played well. Tllomas scored a try, which Dansey converted. He also kicked a goal from a mark. Mr W. Garrard was referee.
The benefit football match between a team of Thursday players and the' Bootmakers was played at Lancaster Park yesterday, in the presence of about four hundred spectators. Some good individual' play was shown on both sides. The game resulted in a win for the Thursday team, who beat their opponents by sixteen points to five. For the former, Hunter, G. Thompson, G. Petrie and Vangioni. scored tries, and Cornish nnd.fiebden. converted two of them. For the Bootmakers, E. O'Brien scored a try and Glovei, converted.
