A WARNING TO CYCLISTS.
TPeb Press Association.l , DUNEDIN, Jult 2. Mr Carew, S.M., gave deferred judgment in a case in which ,£lO damages were claimed for injuries sustained by a boy who was knocked down by A. Christie, while riding a bicycle in Mosgiel after dark. Part of the defence was that there was contributory negligence, as the boy was running in the street at the time. The Magistrate said he thought that the whole of the blame was attributable to the defendant, and it was fortunate for Mm nothing very serious resulted. He would give judgment for £2 10s and costs. Mr Carew, in giving judgment, said he had looked into the matter very closely, because he felt that the practice of bicyclists riding at night without lights was dangerous; in fact he thought it amounted to such culpable negligence that if a person were thereby killed the rider would probably be guilty of manslaughter.
