AN ENORMOUS CROWD.
THE CRUSH AT THE SHOW" \ GROUNDS.
The arrangements' .'for . entrance at the gates of the show ; grounds were very inadequate for the admission cf\he enormous crowd, and it is extremely doubtful if the management contemplated so large an attendance. At one time the block at the gates became so great tliat the police had to resort to force to maintain even rough semblance of order. For a short time the scene was indescribable, and nothing but tlie dogged determination of the constables on duty, manfully aided by a few citizens and volunteers, prevented serious, if not fatal, accidents. The crowd was so annoyed at. being unable to gain admission that part of the fence was torn down. Even women, and children in many instances climbed over the tall, iron-spiked rods, at no small risk, rather than be debarred from getting into the ground. . As it was, the pressure at one point was so intense that several women fainted, and many children were rescued through the efforts of the police and others. A few young men nearly caused mischief by concerted rushes in various directions.
