MAGISTERIAL.

CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, June 23,

(Before Mr E. Beetham, S.M.)

Drunkenness. — Six men, who had not been before the Court previously, were charged with- this offence. His Worship said he supposed he might treat them as "Jubilee drunks" and let them go. They would all be discharged.

Assault. — J. M'Clelland was charged with having assaulted Carrie Perhara. The evidence showed that about balf-past eleven the previous night the parties were standing at the corner of High and Manchester Streets. After some words had passed between them, the accused struck the woman with his fist on the side of the head and knocked her down. A bystander interfered, and the accused struck him with an umbrella. Constable MAuley, who was called to the scene, sent the woman to the hospital and arrested the accused. His Worship fined the accused 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment.

Alleged Receiving Stolen Property. — James Edmonds, alias Fitzgerald, was charged with having, on May 22, received a portmanteau, value 15s, the property of James Foster, knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained. The evidence for the prosecution showed that the portmanteau produced, which was identified as having been stolen from the ketch Lily in Lyttelton, had been redeemed from pawn by the accused and afterwards found in his possession. A young fellow named Driscoll, now awaiting trial in connection with the theft of the same portmanteau, was called by the accused. He stated that he had given the pawn ticket for the portmanteau to the accused, and had told him that he had bought it and had pawned it when hard up. The evidence of knowledge not being conclusive, accused was discharged. ■
