TPer Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Mat 12. . A letter has been rceeived from Hamilton, from Mr A. L. Harvey, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Sugar Beet Syndicate, stating that the promoters are actively engaged in pushing forward the scheme. The capitalists interested are perfectly satisfied with the guarantee given by the Waikato farmers and with the assistance promised by the Government. The girl Vickars, of Cambridge, who attempted to take her life by swallowing laudanum, is still alive, though she is very weak. . It is now stated that the insurance on the building used as Plummer's straw-hat factory had not run out. It was insured in the Commercial Union for .£450. It is probable that in the course of a week a mounted rifle corps will be formed in the city. "The new Mayor (Mr Dignan) at his installation said that a fact that mußt not be lost sight of was the increase of the overdraft, for should they go on increasing it as they had done during the last few months, they would shortly find themselves unable to pay their way. James Lowrie, on a charge of the attempted murder of his wife and two sons, was committed for trial. The defence was reserved. The Gairloch, in berthing at the Onehunga wharf, did considerable damage, owing, it is said, to the break-down of the telegraph connecting the bridge with the engine-room. Some piles and stringers were cut through and displaced, but it is thought that the steamer herself sustained no damage beyond carrying away a portion of the upper rail and breaking an anchor.
