LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Mrs Barney.— Mrs J. K Barney, the delegate from the World's Women's Christian Temperance [Tnion, left for the south by the express to-day. New Brighton Chrysanthemum Show. — The judging of the floral decorations at this show was «lone by Mrs A. M. Ollivier. Master Hi Evans won the second prize in the boys' class, with a very original design. The refreshment stall was admirably conducted by Mrs Evans and Miss Godfrey. Queen's Cadets. — This corps had a full muster yesterday evening, tinder the command of Captain Jones and Lieutenant Lane. They were taken for a mareli out, and did some useful work on the move. The lads have just had a more commodious orderly-room placed at their disposal, which will be much appreciated by them during the winter months. Good Templary. — The Hope of Christchurch Lodge met on Tuesday evening in the Druids' Hall, Bro Sands presiding, and there was a large attendance. A committee was' appointed to flct in connection with the Hawke's Bay Flood Belief Fund, and another, committee to arrange for a lodge concert. One candidate was initiated and two were proposed. An essay on "The New Woman " was promised for the next meeting. Harmony was then indulged in, and the Lodge was closed.' Hardware Athletic Club. — A special general meeting of this club was held at the Clarendon Hotel on Monday evening. Mr A. J. Pickering, the captain, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members." The meeting "was called for the purpose of confirming the rales drawn up by the committee, and after considerable discussion they were adopted. Mr S. K. Bassett was elected to act as the delegate from the club to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Associabion. Messrs R. A. Archer, L. Hastie and A. R. Sherris ■were elected members of* the club. Caledonian Society. — The first of a series of> fortnightly meetings of the members of the Caledonian Society, for social intercourse and games with their friends, was held at the Society's rooms last night, and was very enjoyable. There was a good attendance, and the proceedings were under the direction of Messrs J. Connal and J. J. Dougall, and the time was pleasantly passed with music and cards. It may be mentioned that, in a recent whist match with the members of the Woolston Library, the Society was victorious by twenty-five games to fourteen. Theatre Koyal. — There was a very good audience at the Theatre Eoyallast evening, when Mr George Rignold's company played The Lights o' London for the third time. At the close of each act almost all the characters were called before the curtain and applauded, with the exception of the villain, who was duly hooted. The Lights o' London will be repeated this evening. To-morrow evening Called Back will be staged. Speaking of this, the Melbourne Leader says : — " According to one of the London critics, Mr Eignold has never been surpassed as Paolo Macavi." Collie Dog Trials. — The committee of the Christchurch Collie Dog Club met at the Addington Yards yesterday. Mr F. A. Archer presided. It was reported that a large number of members had joined. The programme for tlie forthcoming meeting was adopted. There will be three events, viz. — Heading and Bringing Back, Heading and Bringing Back and Yarding and Hunt-away with Slew. The committee have secured excellent country in which to hold the trial, within easy distance of town, but the exact locality will not be made known until a day or two before the meeting takes place. Instructions wem given to the Secretary to have the pro'urauime and conditions printed and distributed at once. . ' NON-COMMISSIONED OITICESB* CLUB. — The monthly meeting of the Christchurch Non-Commissioned Officers' Club was held in the club's room last night. There was a good attendance, and the President (Staff-Sergeant Major Barrett) was in the chair. Sergeant-Major Treleaven was elected secretary during the absence of Staff-Sergeant Major Purvis on sick leave. A letter was received from Captain Jowsey, of the Timaru Rifles, requesting the assistance and patronage of the Christchurch Volunteers for the military circus to be held in Christchurch during Jubilee week in aid of the funds for repairing the Timaru drillshed. It was decided that the members of Uhe club should pledge themselves to give any assistance necessary to their Timaru comrades during their visit. A letter wa3 received from Sergeant Pearce, Kaiapoi, challenging the Christchurch Volunteers to a rifle match, fifteen men aside, against the Kaiapoi and Rangiora Kifles. It was decided to accept the challenge for May 22.
