COUNTRY NEWS.
South Malvern.— The annual meeting of ratepayers in the South Malvern Eoad District will be held at 2 p.m. on May 5. Eoad Board. — Messrs W. J. Atkinson, E-. Kingsbury and R. Thompson have been elected unopposed as members of the Cust Eoad Board. Licensing Committee. — The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Licensing Committee will be held at the Magistrate's Court, Kaiapoi, at noon on Monday, June 7. The annual meeting of the Christchurch. Licensing Co mi nittee will be held on June 2; that of the Riccarton Committee on June 4, and that of the Avon Committee on June 5. The Selwyn Committee will meet at the Courthouse, Darfield, at noon on June 4. Cust Literary Institute. — At a meeting on Monday evening, a discussion took place as to the best means for raising funds to put a new roof on the hall. It was decided to hold a public ball, and. that six outside gentlemen should be associated with a like number of the Institute Committee in making the necessary arrangements. It was also decided to hold a concert to supplement the funds. The committee resolved to purchase an additional supply of books for the library, Akaroa Borough Council. — The usual fortnightly meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council was held on Wednesday ; present —the Mayor, and Councillors Taylor, Harrison, Vangioni, Penn, Heath, Penlington, M'Gregor and Orbell. Councillor Vangioni made the usual declaration and took his seat. Correspondence was l-ead from the wharfinger enclosing a cheque for £5Q 11s 7d for wharf dues. A license for the Temperance Hall was granted, as were also two carriers' licenses to Mr Collett and a petroleum license to F. T. Anning. A letter Avas received from Captain Day, thanking the Council for their kindness during the recent visit of the College and Mounted Rifles. Mr Montgomery sent a cheque for .£lO towards the fund for the Hawke's Bay floods. It was stated that the County Council was desirous of acting with the Borough Council with reference to collecting funds for the celebration of the Eecord Eeign. Some routine' business was afterwards transacted, and the meeting ended. '
