SPORTS COMMITTEE.
| A meeting of the Sports Committee in connection with the celebration of the | Eecord Eeign was held in the City Council Chambers las.t night ; present — Messrs W. ' Harris (chairman), W. I. Ballinger, B. P. . Gully, F. Cooper, W. G. Williams, G. ' Milne, J. C. Cusack, F. Denby. Apologies for non-attendance were received from ! Messrs 0. W. Exall, H. S. Eatchelor, F. E. Hyman, A. Francis and T. H. Harker. The [ Chairman explained that the smoke concert ; to the New Zealand contingent was the chief cause of the absence of committee- ' men Lieutenants Sandford, Dougall and Fairbairn. Messrs Samuels and T. Kerr were added to the committee. The Chairman mentioned that at the last meeting of the committee it had been decided to devote their efforts to the Hawke's Bay Belief Fund up to and including May 24. Mr J. C. Cusack moved, Mr F. Denby seconded, and it was resolved unanimously — " That public sports ; be held on May 24." On the motion of Mr W. G. Williams, it was resolved that a deputation, consisting of his Worship the Mayor, and the Chairman and Secretary of the sports, should wait on the Directors of the Lancaster Park Company, and obtain that ground on as favourable terms as possible. The following were appointed a sub-committee to draw up a programme and report on Wednesday, May 5 : — Messrs W. G. Williams, H. S. Batchelor, J. C. Cusack, Lieutenant Sandford and W. G. Garrard, Mr J. C. Cusack to act as convener. The meeting then adjourned till Wednesday evening, at eight o'clock. A public 1 , meeting will be held in the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, to-morrow evening, for the purpose of considering the Eecord Eeign celebration and the relief to the Hawke's Bay settlers.
