FIRES.

At 12.40 this morning an alarm of fire was given from the box at the Caversham Hotel, Lower High Street. The Brigade turned out quickly with all its plant, but when it was seen that the fire was beyond the boundaries, the Lichfield chemical engine went to the scene aud the others returned. The fire totally destroyed a sixroomed house in Ball's Boad, Opawa, owned by Detective O'Connor, of Dunedin, and occupied by Mr E. J. Atwood, artist. It appears that Mr Atwood, who was alone in the house, was reading a newspaper- in bed, and went to sleep, dropping the paper on to a lighted candle. The place was in flames in a very few minutes, and Mr Atwood had difficulty in escaping from the burning building, saving nothing. The furniture j was insured in the Commercial Union Office for .£IOO, but the insurances on the ; house could not be ascertained. '
