THE RECORD REIGN.

♦— A meeting of the Record Reign Celebration Committee at Rangiora was held at the Municipal Council Chamber last night. There was an attendance of about fortyfive. The Mayor presided. Mr A. Shankland suggested that in view of the urgent need there was for assisting the sufferers by the Hawke's Bay flood, nic.Li*}rs in connection with the celebration should be left in abeyance for three weeks, and all energies should be directed towards aiding the object referred to. The Mayor, in reply, stated that he had opened a subscription list, and intended to personally canvass the town. He had taken this course so that the Record Reign celebration should not be interfered with. Already a liberal response had been made to his appeal, and he trusted the people of Rangiora would respond as generously as they had done on previous occasions when the sufferings of their fellow colonists had demanded their practical sympathy. Mr Shankland said that when he spoke he was not aware a subscription list had been opened ; and he was satisfied with the steps being taken to aid the sufferers. The business of the meeting was then proceeded with. Mr A. S. Clarkson was appointed secretary, and Mr A. Y. Hay treasurer. The question of the date of the celebration was discussed, and it was finally decided to fix it at a future meeting, but the feeling was that it should be the week before the Christchurch demonstration. Committees were then elected as follow : — Procession — Captain Helmore, of the Volunteers ; Superintendent Smith, of the Fire Brigade; Superintendent Picard, of the Southbrook Brigade ; Messrs J. Marshall, W. Bridget, A. Shankland, W. Jeffries, Angus Campbell, H. Boyd, H. C. J. Bailey, Captain of Fire Police; F. J. Curuberworth, W. D. Bean and H. Martin ; Sports — The officers and committee of the Rangiora Athletic Association ; Entertainments—The Revs F. P. Fendall and T. G. Carr, Messrs W. Allan, W. D. Bean, E. W. Relph, G. Shorland, G. F. Smith, F. .T. Cumberworth, A. Tolput, M. Scott, A. B. Blackett, W. Gower, J. M'Gibbon, C. Leich and K. Ball; Finance — Messrs M. Amy, E.R. Good, J. Marshall, T. Keir, J. 0. Jones, H. Bailey and the treasurer. It was decided that each committee should have power to add to its number. The secretary was instructed to apply to the Literary Institute Committee for the free use of the hall ante-room for meeting purposes. It .was arranged that the chairmen of the committees should form a Printing and Advertising Committee. During the meeting several apologies for absence were received, and a letter was read from the Rev Father Aubrey declining to act on the committee, but expressing his hearty good wishes for the success of the gathering.
