AMONG THE ICEBERGS.
m THRILLING EXPERIENCES.
TPer Press Association.] MELBOUENE, Feb. 23. The German steamer Essen had an exciting time among icebergs. After passing the Crozets she ran on to a submerged berg, and glided up the sloping surface, but after a few thrilling-moments she slid off again without losing her equilibrium. She sustained no injury. DUNEDIN, Feb. 23. During the passage of the barque America, she was among ice for twelve days, several very large bergs being close to the ship. On Jan. 31, at 2.45 a.m., during a dense fog but smooth sea, an imiuensG_ iceberg must have passed close to the ship. There was a rushing of something at the rudder and along the ship resembling a shoal of fish, followed by a crackling and crunching and a noise like the report of a large cannon, which was the ice breaking up aud grazing along the side of the ship. So close was the berg that the backwater of it washed up against the stern, and the ice was so thick round the vessel that nothing could be seen. It produced a sensation to all on board, which they hope they will never experience again. The position was so dangerous that the lifeboat was provisioned and made ready to launch at a moment's notice, but happily it was not required.
