DAIRY PRODUCE EXPORTS.
"The following are the shipments of dairy I produce by the' National Dairy Association • of New Zealand (South Island branch), from Lyttelton. and Port Chalmers to the United Kingdom, from the opening of eeason; 1896-97 to- date :— FROM LYTTELTOK.
Mr J. R. Scott, Secretary of the National Dairy Association, in forwarding the above returns, writes: — "All cheese and butter : show marked improvement, due, I am convinced, to : Government instruction. Uniformity is becoming miarkcd. Credit is also due to the painstaking efforts of factory managers and makers. Nearly all the shipments are factory-made ; very little else is shipped now, I am glad to say." The above figures differ greatly from those recently - published by the Agricultural Department. The latter stated the exports during January from Lyttelton. at 40f tons butter and 28 tons cheese, and from' Dunedin at 33$ tons butter and 61 J tons cheese. Probably the Government figures were obtained from tho Customs returns, and- the difference is due to some of the exports not having been entered at the Customs until the following month. , The Dairy Association's return places the export in a much better light. .
