Dr Nansen is descended from Hans Nansen, who was burgomaster of Copenhagen in 1658, and headed the civic forces during the city's siege by the Swedes. Hans was something of a statesman besides, and while he fought the Swedes outside the city walls, fought the privileged nobles within. He succeeded in forcing them to pay taxes like other people, and against their opposition made the crown of Denmark hereditary. It is interesting to* note, also, that this same Hans Nansen, v/hen a young man, made what were for those days some highly adventurous Arctic voyages, and explored the shores of the White Sea. The total sum raised as Inland Revenue on behalf of the United Kingdom from the Irish people in 1594-G was slightly less than six million sterling, so that the startling conclusion now set before the British nation is that Parliament has been overtaxing Ireland to the extent of very nearly twice the amount which she ought justly be asked to pay. One of the'oclclerfc of all matrimonial cases on record occurred some time ago in the United States, where a lady sued her divorced husband for a breach of promise of remarriage.
