"Women's Political Association. — Miss Maude will address the members of the Women's Political Association at the Temprance Hall, Gloucester Street, at eight o'clock to-morrow evening. Avon Licensing Committee. —It is understood that the following gentlemen have consented to be nominated for the Avon district : — Messrs A. Marshall (Mayor of Linwood), G. M'lntyre, J. Diiloway, T. N. Horsley and W. Nicholls. Socialist Church. — A well-attended meeting of the Socialist Church was held at 341, St Asaph Street, last night, when several new members were enrolled, and business concerning the futra-e working of the organisation was transacted. UNREDEEMED PLEDGES. —Mr W. R. Harding, as advertised elsewhere, will hold a sale of unredeemed pledges in his auction rooms to-morrow. The catalogue is the largest yet submitted by auction in Christchurch, and comprises bargains to suit everyone, as every lot must be sold. Okder of Foresters. — The Ladies' Court Queen of Canterbury, No. 77i5(>, held its monthly meeting last evening, when there was a good attendance. The Sick Visitors reported that there were no members on the sick fund. The Chief Ranger introduced Sister Hibbard, of the Nelson Ladies' Court."" Nelson was the. first town in this colony where a Ladies* Court was started. Bro Langfovd, of Court Star of Canterbury, No. 2309, having presented a prize to the lady who proposed the greatest number of candidates during the past year, it was decided that the prize should be presented to Sister Hadfield at an anniversary "social." One candidate was initiated. Receipts, 4s. Prohibition League. — The Christchurch Prohibition League held its usual Avcekly meeting on Friday evening. The Rev J. Dawson occupied the chair. A resolution was passed expressing gratification at the position taken on the liquor question by the Presbyterian General Assembly, the New Zealand Congregational Union, and Commandant Booth, as representing the Salvation Army! The programme of the annual convention of the Canterbury Prohibition League v, r as read, and several new members were elected. The Fete Committee met subsequently. Satisfactory reports from the various subcommittees were received and discussed. Stdenham Football Club. — A meeting of the committee was held last evening ; present — Messrs Shirlaw (chairman), Gassvn, Harm an, Forrester, Skelton, Halliday and Harrison. Correspondence was received from . the Melrose Club, of "Wellington, relative to the annual match at Easter, which will be played in Christclmrch. The annual report of the club was, read, and after some slight alterations was passed for presentation at the annual _ meeting. • Several accounts were passed' for payment;, including one for renovating the club rocms, which now bear a creditable . appearance, the work having been carried out by Mr Teague to the entire satisfaction of the members. The committee has obtained an enlarged photograph of the late captain, Mr S. J. Denhani. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Harrison for his trouble in attending to the work of renovation, and for his donation of several picture frames. • E'rai.n-agz oz TuiAr.L-.— The ilayor of Timaru has received notice from the Treasury that his application for a loan for the improvement of the drainage of Timaru of ,£4OOO under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, bus been provisionally approved The usual steps must be taken, and the loan, it is stipulated, must be taken in two yearly sums of «£2OOO each. The Mackenzie Lakes. — The South Canterbury members of the joint committee of Acclimatisation Societies appointed to visit the Mackenzie lakes and report on the- advisableness of opening them for the netting of trout, returned to Timaru yesterday, but have not yet conferred and agreed to the recommendation | to be made to the South Canterbury Society. It will probably be in favour of throwing the lakes open. ; Water Supply Board.— A meeting of 1 the "Wahnakariri - Ashley Water Supply Board was held on Thursday; present — Messrs John O'Halloran (chairman), 1 Dalziel and Dickenson. A letter was read 1 from the Minister of Lands informing the 1 Board that authority had been given to place to the Board's credit a subsidy of '. .£I2OO to the Brown's Sock water supply. Mr Thomas Pearson interviewed the Board with reference to land that had been taken ; from the Burnt Hill Estate for Brown's Rock water-races, and it was resolved that the matter should be dealt with 1 at a meeting to be held on Feb. 25. 1 Several applications for the position o£ 3 caretaker for the Brown's Rock .races, from ' .the headworks to the Eyre were received, and that of Mr Edwin Paget was accepted. It was resolved to ask Messrs Moore and 1 Meredith, M.H.R/s, to use their influence " with the Government to have the forest ' on Cooper's Creek conserved from the free c hold line to the top of Mount Oxford, as a the destruction of the bush might affect '• the water supply.
