SPORTING.

WORK AT FLEMINGTON, [Per Press Association.]

MELBOURNE, Feb. 22,

The recent rainfall has placed the tracks in splendid condition. At Flemington, this morning, the work was principally confined to preparing for test gallops tomorrow. Newhaven cantered round apparently none the worse for Saturday's fall, and Bloodshot moved, very nicely, being evidently in great heart. Hovais pleasing his admirers immensely, galloping in the best-form of all and going well. He is certain to prove extremely dangerous whatever he starts in during the meeting. He is much fancied in usually wellinformed circles for tr.e Xevnr.arlcet Handicap.

Valiant, who has been heavily backed down to 100 to 11, presents a beautifully mellow appearance, and is in magnificent form. So is . Staffa, the only South Australian representative. Staffa is bound to run forward. Betting is dull, pending the second acceptances to-day. After Auruni's brilliant performance in the Electric Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, much anxiety is displayed amongst backers regarding the elect of the St Albans stable. For the Newmarket Handicap the choice will probably lie between Cydnus and Pilatus.
