CRICKET.

♦ QUEENSLAND v. ASHBURTON AND SOUTH CANTERBURY EIGHTEEN. This match was commenced on the Ashburton Domain ground at noon yesterday. Queensland won the toss, and decided to take advantage of what was a nicely-prepared wicket. Donahoo and Dr Macdonald were the first to bat, and immediately started to make runs pretty freely. Donahoo was badly missed twice, and was lucky enough to get a couple more lives before he was finally bowled, after making 33. Bradley quickly knocked up 35, Cowley contributed 20 and Jones 14. Dr Macdonald played very steadily all through, and carried his bat for 70, the innings closing for 205. He was at the wickets three honrs and forty minutes. Moore and Jefferson commenced the Ashburton innings shortly after 5 p.m., and immediately started putting on runs till Jefferson was bowled for a nicely played 15. Moore contributed 25, and Avhen stumps were drawn there were five wickets down for a total of 66. The Queensland men were entertained at luncheon at the Commercial Hotel, and Mrs H. Alington, with the assistance of a number of lady friends, provided afternoon tea on the ground. The match will be resumed at 11.30 this morning. Appended are tho scores: —

[Per Press Association.] ASHBURTON, Jan. 13. Play was resumed to-day in good weather on a fair wicket. There was a poor attendance. At lunch time, sixteen Ashburton wickets were down for 144. The batting was not brilliant.
