Miss Jacobs, a governess employed in Carew's family, testified that she ordered syrup of lead and arsenic at Mrs Carew's request, the chemist asking her at the' time why tlie family purchased so mnch deadly poison. Mrs Carew admitted that sho had been indiscreet in not taking a medical man into her confidence with regard to her husband's habit, and Bhe was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing his death. Intense excitement was caused in Court when Miss Jacobs confessed that she had murdered Carew, and also written a number of mysterious letters which had been found, and which sought to show that deceased committed suicide owing to the appearauce of a strange woman at Kobe, with whom he had formerly had relations.
