' FPeb Press Association.! A SEAM OF COAL. MELBOURNE, Jan. 11. A five-foot scam of hard, black coal has been struck in the Ontrim mine. A DISCOVERY. A shower of red rain fell after the late drought. The colouring arose from particles of iron contained in dust floating in the atmosphere. A horticultural expert made the discovery that wherever the red rain touched the slugs infesting pear trees, the pest was completely clestroyedj and the trees have not since required spraying. NEW SOUTH WALES WRECKS. SYDNEY, Jam. 12. Last year nine vessels were wrecked on the New South Wales coast. Their value, with cargoes, was .£19,000. AN UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH. ADELAIDE, Jan. 11. The relief party returned from an unsuccessful search for the missing members of the Calvert exploring expedition. The party driven back by extreme heat and -want of food and water.
