The Wellington Regatta. — The yacht Pastime left Lyttelton early this morning, for Wellington, to compete at the regatta to be held there on Jan. 23; League of New Zealand Wheelmen. — The Canterbury Times has been appointed, for the present, official organ »of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen. Rangiora Magistrates' Court. — At this Court to-day William Baylias was fined 5s and 7s costs for riding a bicycle on the footpath. This was the only business. The Weather. — The temperature was again excessively high in North Canterbury to-day, and true to Captain Edwin's prediction a north- wester set in during the morning. The Otarama Fibe. — It is stated that, though the bush in the immediate vicinity of Otarama has been burned, the fire did not cross Patterson's Creek, and that there is a deal of picturesque country untoxiched and still available as a holiday, resort. Woolston School.— The monthly meeting Of the Wpolston School Committee was held last night ; present — Messrs J. Richardson (chairman), J. M. Douglas 3 (hon secretary), R. S. M'Diarmid, E. T. Thomas, T." Manifold, and J. Milne. Apologies were received from Messrs M. Gimblett, J. Clewarth, and J. Anderson. The headmaster was also present. The reports showed that previous instructions had been fulfilled. Votes of thanks were accorded to the Eev J. W. Scorgie for instruction given to the children in biblical knowledge, and for his address delivered at the prize giving, and to Mesdames Richardson, Douglass, and M'Diarmid for examining the lneedlework and sewing. The committee nominated as candidates for the Board of Education Messrs John Richardson and John Moncrieff Douglass. Foresters. — The quarterly summoned meeting of the Court Star of Canterbury ■was held on Monday evening, the C.R., Bro H. J. Ranger, m the chair. There was a large attendance. The Woodwards reported thirteen members on the Sick Fund. - Correspondence was read from the Registrar in reference to the amended by-laws. The Court adjourned for harmony. Bros Crooks, Hobbs, Eldridge, Bruce and Gent gave songs and recitations. The C.R. de- . dared the, following elected to office for the ensuing term:— C.R., Bro H. J. Ranger (re-elected) ; S.C.R., Bro Main ; S.W., Bro T. Cooper; J.W., Bro J. Gent; 5.8., Bro Ballinger; J. 8., Bro Savage; A.S., Bro Jewis; M.S., Bro Watts; Management Committee, Bros Bruce, Buckley, C. A. and H. T. Eldridge, Machin and Hunter; Arbitration Committee, Bros Matthews, Sutton, Yogel, Bell, Dunmill, Quartermain, Grapes, Swan, Saggars, M'Adani, Bartlett and Hoffmeister ; auditors, Bros Wathew and Steven; District Delegates, Bros Hunter, Wathew, Beattie, Kent, and Mummery. Two members were proposed for initiation. The receipts of the evening were .£240 12s 6d. " Gazette " Notices.— Notice appears in the Gazette that 31a lr, Section 3092, Block V., Wakanui Survey District, have been reserved for the purposes of secondary education. At the request of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, authority is given for the sale by auction of 246 a 3r 4p in the Westerfield district. Certain sections in the Waimate district have been set apart for village settlements. The holding-area of land to village settlers in the Orari township village-homestead settlement has been increased to twenty acres. Mr R. P. Pole has been appointed Deputy-Registrar of- Births, Marriages and Deaths for the Hororata district, and Mr J. Alexander for the Amuri district. Messrs E. Darling, W. P. Spencer and A. H. Smith have been appointed rangere under the Animals Protection Act, and officers under the Fisheries Conservation Act for North Canterbury. The Governor has approved of the transfer of Lieutenant Hawdon from the Napier Naval Artillery Volunteers to the Christchurch City Rifle Volunteers. Loan and Investment Society. — The forty-first half-yearly meeting of the Friends of Labour Loan and Investment Society was held at the Market Hotel last evening, and was fairly attended. Mr Couzens presided. The committee presented the half-yearly report and balancesheet, from which it appeared that business had been very satisfactory, the only thing necessary to further the interest of the society being the introduction of new members of a satisfactory kind. The society now consisted of JSB members, holding 538 shares, with a capital of .£3113 15s 6d. During the half-year the sum of .£542 had been advanced in small loans to members, making the total amount advanced by the society .£57,647. The amount of profit now on the books was .£24-2 16s 6d, and the committee recommended that the usual dividend at the rate of 6 per cent per annum should be declared and added to members' stock. This would absorb .£BS 10s, leaving .£157 6s 6d to carry forward. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the meeting proceeded to elect officers for the ensuing term, with the following result : — Mr T. Gapes, chairman ;Mr T. Jacobsi cashier ; and Messrs G. S. Clark, J. Hiron/ and E. H. Couzens, committeemen. The meeting closed with a cordial vote of thanks to the permanent and retiring officers' for the manner in which they had carried on the business of the society. Christchurch Presbytery.— The Rev A. M. Wright was elected Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery to-day. The Heat.— As showing the intense heat prevailing to-day it may be noted that a thermometer lying on the ground in the sunshine in a suburban garden I registered 152 degrees. When stood upright it registered 14S degrees. Personal.— lnformation has been received in Christchurch to the effect that Pastor Birch, who has been in America tor the past twelve months, is returning to this colony by the Mariposa, which is due at Auckland on Jan. 2S. It is understood that after a short stay here he will proceed to England. Butchers' Picnic. — A well attended meeting of butchers was hold on Monday evening to consider the question of the annual picnic. Mr G. Smith was elected chairman, Mr J. Nind, honorary secretary, and Mr G-. Rose, honorary treasurer. A strong Working Committee was formed from those present. The Queensland Cricketers.— The Queensland cricketers, with the exception of Mr Fish, left this morning for Ashburton, where they play the local club. There were quite a number of Christchurch cricketers to see them off. Mr Fish leaves for Dunedin to-morrow to join the Tarawera on her excursion to the Sounds. Kaiapoi School Committee. — The monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi School Committee was held on Monday evening; present — Messrs Moore (chairman), Caverhill, Young, Feldwick and Butcher. A letter was received from the Education Board as ■to the nomination •of three members of the Board. Accounts amounting to £4 18s were passed for payment. Leave of absence was granted to Mr Clark. •■ ' ' Stone Gathering Machine.— At eleven o'clock this morning; a trial of Mr J. Anderson's stone gathering machine, took place in St Asaph Street, between the East Belt and Barbadoes Street, and also on the latter street as far as Tuam Street. The machine gathers the stones into rows, so that they can be conveniently picked up or broken. Mr Oakley Archer, city surveyor, and Mr Smith, town clerk of Linwood, were present, and expressed themselves satisfied with the working of the machine. j
