THE CHESS TOURNEY.
I NINTH BOUND. [ The ninth round of the New Zealand chess tournament was opened this morning. Barnes placed another game to his credit and is still leading, but there is every indication that Mellor, who hus the same number of ' wins as the Wellington crack, will pull his game off also. There is very little doubt now that the champion will be provided out of these two. Tbe following are details of play up to the luncheon adjournment. Board 1.-^-Gifford v. Hookham. The Bulls representative opened with a Scotch Gambit, and positions are fairly even. Board 2. — Grierson v. Andersen. Black adopted the French Defence, and soon had Grierson in difficulties, and has a winning position. Board 3. — Meldrum v. Mellor. Meldrum opened with a Queen's Gambit, which his opponent declined. Mellor gained a piece for the sacrifice of two pawns, and a tough game is being fought. Board 4. — Barnes v. Edwards. From a ,Euy, Lopez opening Barnes got a strong attack, gaining the exchange and • also Pawns, and in the forty-eighth move Edwards resigned. Board 5. — Pleasants v. Cocks.. Cocks defended with the King's Fianchetto opening, and developed rather a cramped position, but otherwise' the game is fairly even. Mason a bye.
