TELE COMMISSIONER OF CROWN LANDS.

Mr Sidney Weetman, the newly-appointed Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands for the provincial district of Canterbury, who assumed the duties of hiß office yesterday, has not arrived at his present responsible position by any 'sudden jump. Mr Weetman is one of the oldest officera in the Government service, having joined the Provincial Survey Department of Southland in 1862. In 1866 he joined' the office of the Inspector of Surveys in the Auckland District, where he remained for some time. Longing for open life in the field again, Mr Weetman was appointed as Resident Engineer in charge of the construction of roads through Maori country under the late Sir Donald M'Lean until 1877. From that date till 1881 he acted as District Surveyor in the extreme north, and from 1881 to 1887 a*. District Surveyor in Auckland. From Auckland he was transferred to Gisborne, where he held charge of the Branch Survey Ofl&ce till 1889, when he was appointed Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands at Taranaki, which appointment he held till 1893. He left Taranaki to fill the position of Chief Surveyor of Marlborough, and from the latter place he takes up his present office at Christchutch. to which he brings, as will have been gathered from the above, thirty-five years of experience culled from all parts of the colony.
