HOW THE STEAMER WAS FLOATED.

NELSON, Jan. 41 , The steamer Kennedy arrived from Cape Farewell to-night. Having transhipped some of her coal into the Mawhera on i Sunday, sho went alongside the Euapohu ! at daylight this morning to take off cargo. : The steamer Mana, which took off eighty tons on the previous- evening, also< again ; went alongside. By means of the two vessels two hundred' and fifty tons were taken from amidships, besides which the steamer was relieved' of about forty tons ! weight by the removal of passengers and* their effects on- the previous day. On I Sunday night's tide the Euapehu shifted about her own length astern and canted bow round to- the westward. At nine this morning preparations were made for' hauling the Euapehu off. ; The steamers Mawhera, Kennedy and Mana all commenced . to tug, and the big vessel's engines were set going full , speed astern. After rolling awhile on the sand, the Euapehu came off stern first, apparently quite uninjured, and from the attendant steamers hearty cheers went up, and several caps went overboard. The ; steamers then proceeded to their respective destinations.

The Euapehu went ashore in full daylight when going full speed, but ran up on the sand so smoothly that many on board i did not know that she had touched, and '■. the engineers, wondered what was bringing up the engines.
