AUCKLAND NEWS.

[Per Press Association.! } AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. Two young men named William Atkinson and John Stewart were arrested yesterday on a charge of stealing six £1 bank notes from the person of William Veran on the Ellerslie racecourse platform. Accused were brought up at the police court this, morning and remanded for a week. A number of cases of pocket-picking at the races have been reported. An additional number of police in' private clothes, in consequence, were sent out to the course to-day. A fire occurred at Drury in a building used by Mr Hodge as dwelling-house and store. There is an insurance of ,£4OO in the Manchester Office. In a wrestling match between S. Mathews, champion middle-weight of America, and J. W. Sutherland, champion of New Zealand, which took place m the City Hall for ,£SO, Sutherland won.
