FRIGHTENING SMALL BIRDS.

An ingenious method of frightening the small birds is (says the Otago Daily Times) adopted at the strawberry gardens in the Leith Valley. , Cords are run through rings in short posts all over the garden, and attached to these are old kerosene tins at stated intervals, containing Bcraps of old iron or anything that will rattle. The enda are kept at a handy point, and everyone who passes gives them a jerk, causing the tins and their contents to rattle, and sending the little depredators off in alarm, y In one case, the owner alleges that he takes the ends of the cords into his bedroom at night, and every now and again in the early morning he mechanically gives them a jerk without properly waking. Thrushes are the most difficult to frighten.
