THE FIREWORKS.

The day's proceedings were brought to a close by the fireworks display on the water. A procession of boats, from which rockets and other fireworks were discharged, and coloured fires burned, was towed around the inner harbour after dark. As the wind moderated considerably after sundown, the sea was smooth, and the effect was very pretty. H.M.S. Lizard exhibited her searchlight. The arrangements were in the hands of the Lyttelton Fire Brigade, under Superintendent Toomey, who were assisted by a number of visiting firemen. The fireworks were manufactured by Mr Stokes, of Christchurch. By 10 p.m. the day's attractions were exhausted, and then commenced a general rush for the railway station. The department was again equal to the task put upon it in dealing with the transit of the immense crowd, and every credit is due to the stationmaster (Mr A. C.
