ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

[Per Press Association.! NAPIER, Jan. 2. Fred Apperley, fourteen years of age, ■was drowned whilst bathing at Hastings yesterday. Strenuous efforts were made by deceased's brothers to save him. The body has been recovered. FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT. WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. The accident at Evans Bay yesterday ■was caused by the boat jibing, and she then went over. The victims were W. Hazelwood, sailmaker ; Mary Anna Craig, aged twelve, daughter of Peter Craig, painter; and Jessie Wilson, daughter of* Alexander Wilson, grocer, all residents of Newtown. There were seven others, one man and six young girls in the boat, and these were rescued by a party which put out from the patent slip, and are now out of danger. The sad accident was witnessed from the shore by some of the parents of the occupants, but they were helpless to render assistance. The bodies of Hazlewood and Miss Wilson, two of the victims of yesterday's boating accident, have been recovered. GREYMOUTH, Jan. 2. The jockey who was injured through the fall at Pukeiti is now in the hospital in a critical condition, but is improving. The ground was greasy through the rain, causing the horse to fall. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 2. Through a horse swerving off the course at the Orepuki races yesterday, an old miner named Michael Hennessey was knocked down and sustained injuries from which he died this morning.
