• The monthly meeting of the East Christchurch School Committee was held at the main school on Dec. 3 ; present — Messrs , M. Sandstein (chairman), H. Allison, S. Clarke, D. Lumsden and J. E. Brunt. Apologies were received for the absence of , Messrs F. J. Board and J. S. Williams, j Two circulars were received from the Eail- '. way Department, one with reference to . excursion fares, the other as to fares for school children and teachers travelling by ! rail. Eeceived. From the Board of Educai tion, twopamphletSjonereferringtomanual \ training in primary schools, the other hay- ! ing reference to technical education. The headmaster's monthly report stating the , average attendance and roll number, both , showing a decrease as compared with \ November, 1895. The total roll number is | 1643, and the attendance as follows: — Main school 987, Phillipstown 203, South Belt 102. He also called attention to a report published in the Lyttelton Times a - few days since, to the effect that a boy i broke an arm at the South Belt school i through falling from a swing. There are • no swings at the school, and no boy broke ' his arm there. It was resolved to close ■ the schools for the Christmas holidays on i Thursday, Dec. 24, and reopen on Feb. 1. After passing accounts the meeting closed.
