! O ;' Baud Music. • — The Lyttelton Band, imder the baton of Mr D. M'Killop, will play a programme of music at the comer of London and Canterbury Streets this evening, commencing at eight o'clock. An Obdeelt Election. — As showing low orderly were the proceedings in town last night, it may he mentioned that it was rot found necessary to arrest a single individual. A few rotten eggs were thrown in the crowd, but there was no other objectionable conduct. Lyttelton Land Sports. — A meeting of the Land Sports Committee was held on Tuesday night at the Empire Hotel; Mr Cook took the chair. It was resolved to hold sports in London Street on New Year's Day, as usual. Mr Mitchell was appointed secretary and treasurer. Stessrs Hickson and Gordon were appointed canvassers for Christchurch, and Messrs Cook and Mitchell for Lyttelton. The balance-sheet •was received and adopted, a balance still remaining of <£1 3s. Eiccaeton Licensing Committee. — The quarterly meeting of the Eiccarfcon Licensing Committee was held at the Eoad Board Office at noon to-day ; present — Messrs E. Beetham, S.M. (chairman), J. W. Overton, 11. S. Campbell, J. Jackson, W. Henderson, J. E. Hanson, H. Nunweek and J. Haydon. j The police reported that the fire escapes at ali the hotels in the district were efficient, j A transfer of the license of the Eiccarton Hotel was granted from J. G. Harris to E. Oppenheim. A permit for the Black Horse Hotel was granted to J. B. Eose. The Lyceum.— Mr W. TV. Collins will lecture in the Lyceum to-morrow evening. The City Mission Home. — Mr T. Herlick appeals to the public for assistance towards providing a Christmas dinner for the poor. Munictpali— -Dr Mickle has consented, at the request of a largely-signed requisition, to stand for the vacant seat on the City Council. School Teems foe Next Yeae. — The principals of Christ's College and of the two High Schools (Boys* and Girls') have agreed upon the following terms for 1897 : ■ — First term, Feb. 4 to May 4; second term, June 2 to August 31 j third term, Sept. 22 to Dec. 22. PERSONAL.-r-Lieutenant Anderson, of the Canterbury Engineers, who has been for a trip to Sydney to restore his health after his severe illness, returned to Christchurch yesterday, after an absence of three weeks. He speaks highly of the courtesy and attention which, as a New Zealand volunteer, he received from the Defence authorities and officers in New South Wales. Opeeetta. — The children attending the New Brighton school gave a performance last Friday night of an operetta composed by Mr S. Hawker, called Tha Beggar Boy. The composition throughout is very tuneful, and the very large audience showed their appreciation of it by frequent encores. Mis 3 Winny M'Allister filled the leading part in a most creditable manner. Cycling. — The Pioneer Bicycle Club's toad race, for a prize — a pair of tyres — presented by the Dunlop Tyre Company, look place yesterday. The course was from the Eiccarton Hotel to the Wheatsheaf and back, about twenty miles, and there were twelve starters. The winner •was Archer, with 4£niin handicap, Casbolt Jimin second, and Eitchie 1 Jmin third. Archer came in three minutes ahead of Casbolt, who was in turn one minute ahead of Eitchie. The winner's time was 54min 47sec, and the actual time 52min 17sec. This is very good considering the rough state of the roads and the head •wind to be contended with on the return journey. Oddfellows' " Social." —An amalgamated juvenile Oddfellows' "social" was held at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lichfiold Street, on Thursday. Prov G.M. Bro Gough presided, and upwards of two hundred members were present. Songs and recitations were given by various members of the different lodges. Toasts were given as follows : — " The Grandmaster and Board of Directors," proposed by P.P.G. Bro Grantbam, and responded to by P.P.G. Bro Kent; "City of Norwich, Lyttelton and Kaiapoi," proposed by P.P.G. Bro Kent, and responded to by P.G. Bro Burns, of Lyttelton Lodge.
