ACCLIMATISATION.

A meeting of the Acclimatisation Society was held at the rooms of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Hereford Street, yesterday afternoon ; present — Mr A. Carrick (in the chair), Sir J. Hall, and Messrs G. B. Ritchie, R. D. Harman, J. N. Hamer, A. Scott, Hon J. T. Peacock, Dr B. M. Moorhouse, and Mr H. A. Bruce, secretary. The Secretary reported that -6250 had been placed to Mr W. Izard's credit in London for the purchase of red deer and feathered game. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking the Council to nominate members on the Board of Control of Reserve 3048 on the Lower Selwyn. Messrs Carrick, Scott and Dr Moorhouse were appointed. Mr W. G. Cave France wrote, suggesting the introduction of the English robin, and taking exception to the proposed expenditure on the importation of deer. It was decidedto reply thatthesosiety thought it useless again to attempt to import robins. The honorary secretary of the Otago Acclimatisation Society wrote, offering the Canterbury Society leave to take a few red deer fawns. The letter was received with thanks. The Secretary of the Otago Society also wrote, suggesting the publication of the names of holders of fishing licenses as a protection against poaching. It was decided to comply with the suggestion if the cost came within reasonable limits. On the proposition of Mr J. N. Hamer, seconded* by Dr Moorhouse, it was resolved that the Society should devote .£25 to the protection of trout Irom poaching in the Upper Selwyn and adjacent streams. On the motion of Dr Moorhouse, seconded by Mr G. B. Ritchie, it was resolved that a sum not exceeding _S2o should be devoted to the same purpose in the Ashley, Rangiora and Kaiapoi districts, to be spent at the discretion of the Committee, providing that residents in these districts gave sufficient financial support. Major Richards and Messrs Tyree and Thompson were elected members of the Council. The question of the sale of trout to the public was left in in the hands of the President, Secretary and Mr G. B. Ritchie. The meeting then closed.
