• Lectube. — Last night theEev — Dukes, of Waimate, lectured at the Eangiora Wesleyan Church on " Dr Guthrie." There •was a fair audience, and the lecture was appreciated. The North-East Ward Election. — Efforts are being made to induce Dr Mickle to offer himself as a candidate for the representation of the North-east Ward on the City Council. Charitable Aid Boabd. — The atatutory meeting of the North Canterbury and Ashburton Charitable Aid Board was held this morning, when Mr E. Westenra was unanimously re-elected chairman. Voltjhteer Examination. — An examination of candidates for commissions in the volunteer force was held at the officers' room at the dril!shed to-day, under the supervision of Lieutenant - Colonel Gordon. There were three candidates — Captain Day, for a majority, and Messrs Ehodes andMerton, for lieutenancies. Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association. — The members of this Association held a meeting at Eangiora yesterday afternoon, Mr M. Macfarlane in the chair. It was decided to vote for Messrs H. F. Gray, H. Overton and E. H. Ehodes for seats on the Board of Governors for Lincoln College. The protest lodged by Mr A. Home against M^ J. Brown's heifer being awarded a prize, on the- ground of it being over age, was allowed, Mr Brown having refused to allow a veterinary surgeon to examine the animal. Fishing Eesults.— The following takes have been recorded in Mr W. J. Alpe's fishing register :— Nov. 18, E. P. Hill, three fish of a total of lo£lb, two weighing 91b ; on Nov. 22, six weighing 431 b, and on Nov. 23, six weighing 61b. Nov. 22, Mr D. M'Cormick, half-a-dozen fish; both of these anglers having secured their baskets in the Eakaia. Nov. 30, Mr W. J. Alpe, two fish, 51b and 3|lb, in the Waimakariri, both taken with the Devon ; and two other anglers each caught a fish in the same river scaling olb and 4lb each. All. the snow rivers are in grand condition, particularly the Eakaia and the Waimakariri. Philosophical Institute. — An ordinary meeting of the Philosophical Institute was held in the Biological School on Monday night. Professor Dendy was in the chair. The following were elected members: — Messrs Walton, Cuthbert, Gilbert Anderson and Meddings, Drs Diamond and Townend. Fifteen associates were also elected. The following papers were read : . — "Order in the Irregularity in the Periodic Law and the Cosmic Importance of Helium and other light Gases," by Professor Bickerton; "The Refraction and Eeflection of X Eay3," and " The Bromine Method for Estimating Sulphur," by Do W. P. Evans; "Notes on New Zealand Land Planarians," by Professor Dendy; " Note on the Mantis found in New Zealand/ by Captain Hutton. Professor Dendy exhibited a number of specimens of vegetable sheep collected in Nelson, and pointed out several interesting facts about their locality and manner of growth. These specimens were much larger than those usually found in Canterbury. Merivale Sale of Work. — The annual sale of work in connection with St Mary's Church, Merivale, was held yesterday in the sshoolroom. The stalls contained a very good display of articles, both useful and ornamental. Those in charge of the stalls were : — Work stall, Mesdames Gibbs, Milsom, Foley, Cooper and Watson ; fancy stall, Mrs Fuller, Miss Waller and Miss Foley; refreshment stall, Mesdames Mearea and Common and the Misses Meares; strawberries and cream stall, the Misses Cox and Miss Baker; lolly stall, Misses Martin, Kinsey and Laurie j flower stall, Misses Dobson and Phillips j produce stall, Mesdames Zouch and Laurie ; Christmas tree, MrsWaymouth and Miss Scrivenor. In addition there were numerous side shows, such as the fish pond, in charge of Mesdames Allan and, Fry, and the art gallery, managed by Mrs Coopei and Miss Nurse. In the evening there was a very good attendance, and the business done was satisfactory. The young ladies of the parish gave a number oi plantation songs in character. Sale of Fruit. — Messrs Clarke and Co. will hold an auction sale of fruit at 2 p.m. to-morrow. Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co. will hold a sale at 11 a.m. to-morrow. Hospital Boabd. — The Hospital Board held its statutory meeting this afternoon ; present— Mr R. D. Thomas (in the chair), Messrs W. Dunlop, R. "VVestenra, J. A. Caygill, C. M. Gray, H. W. Peryman and Drs Stewart and Hunt. Mr R. D. Thomas was unanimously i-e-elected chairman. St Albans Schools. — As a rational treat, in lieu of prizes the committee of these schools proposes to have an excursion to Weka Pass on Friday, Dec. 18. Should the weather be fine, and a good company avail themselves of a cheap trip as is expected, a very enjoyable day may be spent. In the course of a few days tickets for the trip will be obtainable from the teachers of both the Main and Side schools. Supreme Court.— The case of M'Donald v. Wharton, in which a sum of .£162 was claimed on account of damage alleged to have been done to the property of the plaintiff, a farmer at Waiau, by a fire which was stated to have spread from the defendant's land on Highfleld Station, was resumed at 10.30 a.m. to-day before Mr Justice Denniston and a special jury of four. Mr Stringer appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Joynt, with him Mr Hall, for the defendant. The plaintiff's case was closed at 1 p.m., and after the adjournment.that for the defence, which rested on the allegation that the fire which had done the. damage had come from Mr Rutherford's Sherwood Estate, was opened. Somner Borough Council.— A special meeting of this Council was held on Monday evening, to consider the camping question; present— The" Mayor (Mr W. Kitson), Councillors Graham, Hanmer, Hughes, Collins and Deacon. The Mayor read a letter from the borough solicitors (Messrs Stringer and Cfesswell). after which Councillor Deacon moved— "That the matter be adjourned till Wednesday evening next, for the purpose of considering the letter received." This was seconded by Councillor Graham and carried by a bare majority.
