CANTERBURY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.
A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Women's Institute was held on Saturday evening at Chancery Lane Hall, | Miss A. E. Hookhain in the chair. Correspondence in reference to removal of civil and political disabilities was received from Messrs Ell, T. E. Taylor, J. A. H. Marciel and M. Donnelly. These gentlemen stated that they were in accord with the resolution passed by the National • Council of Women. Messrs G. W. Russell, H. G. Ell, J. Joyce, S. R. Webb and R. M. Taylor wrote, endorsing Mr Bolt's scheme for placing the unemployed on State co-opera-tive industrial settlements. Correspondence was also received from the Hon W. Rolleston, Messrs Donnelly, Swarm, Beswick and Wason. Mr Meredith was not in favour of Mr Bolt's scheme. Mr Montgomery did not reply to questions put by societies. The Secretary was instructed to thank all these gentlemen for their courtesy and to forward a copy of Mr Bolt's scheme to those gentlemen who were unfamiliar with it. Mrs Blake proposed and Miss Sherriff-Bain seconded the following resolution, which was carried unanimously : —"The Canterbury Women's Institute accords its heartiest thanks to the editor of the Lyttdton Times for his leaderette 'Nobody's Daughters/ Nov. 26. It pledges itself as an association to work in the direction indicated by him, namely, that till the age of twenty-one ' nobody's daughters ' shall be educated and trained by the State and be taught the priceless value of a good name throughout life, and it pledges itself to influence^ individuals and societies in this direction." At the general meeting which followed the President occupied the chair. She reported that investigations had been instituted in reference to the case of alleged official cruelty brought before the Canterbury Women's Institute at its previous meeting. A sub-committee was appointed to take further steps and report fully to the next meeting. The Secretary then read a letter, drawn up by the executive, to women electors. The various points were 'then discussed and agreod to. The following resolution was unanimously passed : — " That the ■Canterbury Women's TivtU'-ita endorses the letter to women, electors, and prays that the editor of the rimes will print it in extenso." Two new members were duly elected.
