THE NATIVE RISING. FAMINE-STRICKEN" NATIVES. [Per Press Association.] CAPETOWN, Nov. 28. Chickagua has yielded, thus putting an end to the Mashonaland campaign. The laager at Fort Salisbury is dispersing, and the troops are being disbanded. Many people, however, consider peace only temporary. Earl Grey intends to largely restore the indunas* authority under the native commissioners, and permit them to govern their tribal districts. The indunas are to be held responsible for the conduct of the tribes. There are grave prosbects of famine. The South Africa Chartered Company has been supplying food for 40,000 natives for three months. The latter speak in the highest terms of Mr Cecil Ehodes and his immense services and liberality. Rinderpest will make the year 1897 one of privation and high prices. Enormous claims for compensation have been sent in, many of them being fraudulent.
