THE FRANCHISE.
MELBOUENE, Nov. 27. . A conference of representatives of country municipalities, to consider tho Constitution Ampndmen t Act, resolved to petition the Legislative -Council to reject the Bill. Strong objection -is raised to 'giving women a vote. '■ It was stated that 90 per cent of the "wpmen nad nothing to be responsible for, and there __ were not fi ye thousand, resectable, women, who wanted to vote.' There wete simply»a ; few who were always whining about- the sins of the world, and : these ./wanted the vote for a special, purpose." The shifting and shiftless population, including women, whom it was y, proposed to enfranchise would become a dominating power iv legislation ; • ttixxsc, the most irresponsible section of the community would have .a preponderance of. parliamentary power in their hands. The new departure, it was thought, would be mischievous and against the interests of ratepayers. A proposal to give one vote for manhood suffrage, another for thrift, and confine womanhood suffrage to women ratepayers was largely snpportod.*' ■
