For some reason or other the impression got about -that the Premier intended to have himself nominated for Wellington yesterday, and the rumour was industriously circulated in certain quarters. It was for this reason that Mr Duthie was nominated at the last moment ; but a? the Premier is not among the candidates, it is considered unlikely that Mr Duthie will go to the poll. The interest in the election is by no means so keen as on the two previous occasions. The temperance question cuts athwart political lines, and makes it extremely difficult to form any opinion as -to ; the men who are likely to be elected. Mr Atkinson, a Wellington candidate, i although a prohibitionist personally, announced in a speech this week that he would oppose any prohibitory law in Parliament, and that all he would support in Parliament was an extension of the popular powers.of option. * DUNEDIN, Nov. 28. The Premier, last night, received congratulatory addresses from the Workers' Political Committee and the Women's Franchise League. He left for Lyttelton J this morning, where be speaks to-night. Next week he delivers addresses in various parts of the Hawera and Egmont electorates.

Mr Marciel announces a meeting for Monday night, in the Knightstown Library. Mr y> . v\ Collins will speak in the East Christchurch main school on Monday night, Mr Sandstein in the chair. On Tuesday night there will be an open-air meeting, in Colombo Road, Sydenham. On Thursday night, in the Opera House,.he will reply "to the Rev L. M. Isitt. A combined meeting of representativeof Liberal Associations is convened for 7.30 on Monday evening, in Inglis's Biddings, in connection with the candidature of Messrs Collins, Cullen and Marciel. A gentleman who acted as a returnh-g*--officer at the last election, and who is filling a similar position at the present one, has drawn attention to the necessity for electors striking out the whole line when* voting. The erasure of only a word or two is likely to lead to the vote being invalid,., as a paper cannot be accepted unless the intention of the voter is made absolutely clear. The Registrar of Electors has arranged with the printers (the Lyttelton Times Company) for advance copies of the City of Christchurch No. 2 supplementary roll to be available for candidates this even- ■ ing. The Riccarton No. 2 supplementary roll was issued this • morning, and brings the number of electors in that district up to 4120. It is as well that shopkeepers should be reminded that as, by Section 10 of the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act Amendment Act, the day of the local option poll is declared a • compulsory half-holiday "from mid-day/ they will be under the necessity of closing theirplaces of business*, at noon on Friday next, instead of at 1 p.m., the hour of closing on the Thursday N half -holiday. Mr Swarm addressed over 250 electors in the Phillipstown schoolroom last evening. At the conclusion of his address a unanimous vote of thanks was carried. Mr Buddo addressed about sixty electorsin the Stoke school on Wednesday evening, Mr James Webster in the chair. Mr Buddo spoke for an hour and a half, and answered a number of questions satisfactorily. On the motion of Mr Meredith, jun., he received a hearty vote of thanks for his straightforward and able address, which was seconded by Mr W. Anderson, sen., and carried unanimously. As an illustration of the work involved in preparing the rolls for the forthcoming election it may be mentioned that it has been estimated that the registrar of electors for the Christchurch district will have to write his initials no less than ten thousand times in connection with the marking off of tlie names of electors who have left tbe district. On the rolls supplied to the polling places these names nave to be struck out in red ink and initialled. There are about 250 such names on the Christchurckjoll and fortytwo copies of the roll are required for the different polling places. Half an hour and ; five minutes is required for the initialling of each copy, so that the registrar will be occupied for fully twenty hours in doing nothing but signing his initials.
