A curious survival of an ancient custom has just taken place in Norfolk, where a general court, with the leet for the manor of Fakenham Lancaster, was duly held by the steward of the manor. The court consisted of twelve of the inhabitants, presided over by a foreman ; and after being sworn in, they solemnly'proceeded to the^appointment of ale tasters— it being the custom to "taste" or "test" ale according to the price of barley — constables, pinders, lea-ther-sealers, and mill-reeves for the ensuing year. According to the time-honoured custom, the more serious business of the day was followed by a dinner at the local hotel, at which the health of the lord of the manor was toasted with enthusiasm. Salvation Army apostle: "If you swear at those horses, my good man, you'll never go to heaven." Teamster (humbly): "I > knows it, mum ; but if I don't I'll never get to Tonawanda."
