$ CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, Nov. 26. (Before Mr'T. Gapes, jnn., J.P., Mr G. S. Eoss, J.P.,and Mr E. H. Eicketts, J.P.) Charges of Thept. — Joseph Henry Thomas was charged with stealing four pieces of timber of a total value of ss, the property of a person unknown. As the arrest had only taken place a few hours before, Chief-Detective Henderson applied for a remand in order to obtain evidence. Mr Donnelly, who appeared for the accused, asked that his client should be liberated on his own deposit. The Bench decided to allow bail, the accused in .£25, and anothur surety in a liko amount. — Margaret Bean, alias Craig, was charged with stealing one loaf of bread, value threepence, the property of Mrs Bryan, Selwyn Street. Minnie Bryan deposed to seeing accused steal the bread. Followed accused, and took the bread from her. Identified the loaf produced. Detective Benjamin proved the arrest. Accused said that she had exchanged two boot-laces with the baker's boy for the bread. There had been previous convictions against accused, who was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, the Bench remarking that they were determined to stop this petty thieving.
