CHRISTCHURCH.
The polling for the election of the Mayor of Christchurch caused considerable interest, as was shown by the fact that about 150 votes were recorded , during the first hour after the polling place, at the City Council Chambers, was opened. A steady stream of voters passed in flmd out during the day, and cabs and other vehicles were, busily engaged in bringing them to the poll. Mr W. H. Cooper's Committee had a tent on the vacant section opposite the Council Chambers for their headquarters. Mr J. T. Smith's supporters were content with a table on the footpath. Though the contest was keen, it appeared to be conducted in a very amicable spirit. The result is expected to be known about a quarter past seven o'clock this evening.
