DEVELOPMENT OF THE TIMBER INDUSTRY.
At the date of the census (April dast) there were 299 sawmills and sash and door manufactories in operation, against 243 in IBSG — an increase of 56, or at the rate of 23 per cent. The North Island has by the returns 155 mills, and the Middle Island 144. The hands employed m these mills increased during 'the quinquennium at a still greater rate, the figures .being 4059 persons for 189G, and 3266 for 1891, increase 793, or 24 per cent. Four of the hands employed in 1896 were females. The number of hands given in the returns does not include everybody employed in connection lrith the industry, as there are many men engaged in the .bush work not included. Further particulars are as under: — (!) Value of land, buildings, machinery ; and plant— April, 1896> .£573,422 ; April, 1891; .£500,272; increase .£73,150, -or 1 14-62 per. cent. (2) Value of all lnanufacttires during 1895 and 1890— year 1595, «£595,807; year IS9O, .£532,959; increase or 791 per cent. The value of the export of timber for 1895 was d 5143,995.
