DESTRUCTION OF NATIVE BIRDS.

Mr Hugh Boscawen, of the Crown Lands Department in Auckland, lias received a letter from Lord Onslow, ex-Governor of New Zealand, in the course of which he refers to the recent complaints made regarding the obtaining of specimens of the rare stitch birds from the Little Barrier Island. Lord Onslow says ; — " I met Mr Walter Rothschild the other day, and had a long talk with him about the allegation that he had obtained stitch birds from the Barrier Island by offering a large price for them. He was fully aware that the report had reached my ears, and he himself began the conversation. He assured me that he had had the birds which he possesses carefully examined, and he was prepared to say that the evidence of their having been killed a long time was conclusive, and he assured me that they must have been obtained before the Government restricted the killing of birds there."
