LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Sale of Fruit. — To-morrow, at 2 p.m., Messrs Ayers, Beauchamp and Co. will hold an auction sale of fruit at their rooms. Angling. — There are on view in the ■window of Mr W. J. Alpe, in High Street, a very nice trout of 61b weight, which was taken out of the Avon by Mr Joseph Reed, and two smaller fish caught in the Selwyn. Theatrical. — News has been received to the effect that Messrs Williamson and Musgrove have made final arrangements for the New Zealand tour of the PotterBellew Company. They will open in Auckland on Dec. 1, and will be in Wellington at Christmas time, arriving in Christchurch about Jan. 17. Ranchora Brass Band. — This band is now in a flourishing condition, having twenty playing members and a large number of honorary members" amongst the townspeople. On Saturday night the band played a number of selections at the Post Office corner .in very creditable style, and the music was much appreciated. Funeral at Rangiora. — Much regret ■was expressed in Rangiora at 'the death of Mrs Luxton, wife of Mr G. W. Luxton, one of the old residents of the place. The lady passed away on Wednesday night after a comparatively brief illness. Her funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and Mr Luxton being a past officer of the Oddfellows' Lodge and Past District President of the Druids' Society, members of both orders were present in considerable numbers, and marched in front of the hearse. There was also a large attendance of the general public. The remains were interred at the Presbyterian Cemetery, the Rev P. R. Monro officiating. False Alarm of Firf.. — At about twenty minutes to nine on Saturday night the flrebells rang out an alarm, and the Brigade turned out with its plant, only to find that the glass in box No. 18, Colombo Street north, had been broken, apparently for mischiet, as there were no signs of fire.' The Wellington Exhibition. — It has been arranged to have a number of contests in recitations and vocal and instrumental music in connection with the Wellington Exhibition during the Christmas week. Particulars and forms of entry may be obtained from Messrs Milner and Thompson, Manchester Street. Sydenham Band. — The Sydenham Brass Band will play a programme of music in the Sydenham Park to-night, under the baton of Mr W. F. M'Lean. Programme — Quick march, Kathleen Mavourneen? selection, Verdi; valse, May Bloom:' selection, Scottish ; lancers, Sailor Prince; schottische, Just for Funj quick march, Creswick. LytteLTon Naval Artillery. — The Lyttelton Naval Artillery to the number of forty went into camp at ' Ripa Island on Friday evening. Lieutenant-Commander Joyce is in command, and the camp will last fourteen days, during which time the members of the corps will be instructed in big gun work by members of the Permanent Force. Political Council. — A meeting of the Liberal and Labour Political Council was held on Wednesday, at No. 20, Inglis's Buildings. The President, Mr S. Billcliff, occupied the chair. A reply to the test questions submitted by the Council was received from Mr W. W. Collins, M.H.R. It was decided to .take the ballot for the selection of candidates for Christchurch and suburban seats on Friday, Oct. 23, in the Art Gallery. It was also decided that the Council should undertake to entertain the audience with musical and other items -while the result of the 'ballot was being ascertained. The Secretary was instructed to invite Mr O. Saunders, with Messrs ' J. Munnings and T. Barry to act r.s scrutineers, and to request the representatives of the Press to attend. Band Performance.— The Opera House was crowded last night to hear the performances of the Wellington Garrison and Stanmore Brass Bands. The following pieces were played :— Anthem (Stanmore Band) • cornet solo, soprano (S. Cimino) ; bass solo in E flat (R. Herd); cornef solo in B flat (L. King) ; Tannhauser (Wagner) selection, Wellington Garrison Band; horn solo in E flat (R. Nicholson) ; baritone solo ( J. Jenkins) ; cornet solo in B flat (H. Hofland); selection from I Puritani (Bellini) Stanmore Band. Botli bands will leave for the south to-morrow, and will combine for the purpose of playing two marches on their way to the railway station. The route taken will be from the Foresters' Hotel via Armagh, Colombo, High and Manchester Streets, and a start will be made from the Foresters' Hotel shortly after 10 a.m. A Beautiful Face. — Teeth to masticate and wear well, look natural and remain comfortable.
