FROM FAR AND NEAR.

[By Tomtom.] Stanmore, Waimate and Timaru are the only representatives from Canterbury next Bandmaster Thomas Herd (Wellington) has contributed "Helpful Hints" to the British Musician for Au<mst. Bandsmen, peruse it. • The Invercargill Guards, previous to I( ; a y™? ?or Dunedin, held a concert in aid of their expenses. I note that the genial Thomas Anthony helped with one of his inimitable songs ; the ex-Garrison soprano player is always willing to assist. Lieutenant Siddall, of the Garrison, conducted the orchestra with his usual ability. The following items were contributed by members of the band :— Euphonium solo, "In Cellar Cool," Mayo; cornet solo, " Welsh Airs," Wills ; trombone solo, "La Traviata/* Widdowson; bombardon solo; Hansen; baritone solo, "Linda di Chamounix," Grindley; trombone solo, "La Traviata," King; baritone solo, Forbes. The above-named bandsmen acquitted themselves very well, and have no grounds to feel that they are minus friends and and supporters in Invercargill. Mr Charles Wood will conduct at the contest, and to those who know Mr Thomas Walker, it is only reasonable to expect that the Invercargill Guards will go forth in every respect up to the high standard they have ever maintained since their formation. Last year the band won second prize. The following, will probably" represent the Wellington Garrison Band (conductor and bandmaster, Mr Thomas Herd) at the Dunedin contest: — Soprano, S. Cimino; solo cornets, H. Hogland, L. King and L. M'Donald; first cornet, T. Goodchild; second cornet, G. T. Baker ; third cornet, H. Davis (hon sec.) ; repiano cornet, P. N. Denton; solo horn, H. Anslow; first horn, P. Nichols and R. S. Home ; second horn, H. T. Bennett and H. Hull ; flugel horn W. Aisher and • — Pelham ; first baritone, J. Henriebs; second baritone, J: Grant; euphonium, J. A. Donaldson ; solo trombone, H. Cummins; second trombone, E. Watkinsj bass trombone, W. Rennie; E basses, H. T. Diekson, Richard Herd and H:Brentou ; BB bass, W. Smith; monstre bass, A. Baker , bass drum, J . Atkinson ; and side drum, — Hull. Possibly one or two may be unable to get away south, but despite this Mr Herd will, as usual have a splendid band to represent the Empire City, and will carry the united good wishes of his numerous friends. The band will play in Christchurch before proceeding south, and the public will be able to hear the champion band on the special music.
