THE SEDDON GOVERNMENT.

(Coromandel Sun.)

The Seddon Government has stood out for six years. No Government is free from faults, and the present administration is no exception to the rule. Mistakes have been made ; but the man who makes no mistakes doesn't exist, and the Government that couldn't err cannot be found. In spite of all, the present Ministry has done its best, and it has done that at a time when any party was likely to err. There was the banking business. Some people said, " Why not let the bank go ? " But it was impossible to do so. Such persons did not know .what they were talking about. That ruinous wave of financial depression had to be stemmed. Then there was the Midland Railway business. Through that crisis the Premier emerged triumphant. Had he lost the arbitration case the Administration would have fallen. For the advances to settlers, and for the State resumption of land for Village Settlement, the Government deserve all credit. For these gigantic and advancing changes, if for these only, they are entitled to the gratitude of the whole colony. The Alien Bill, and the Bill granting employes a halfholiday will complete our review for the present. It is now proposed to borrow a further sum of one million, of which amount substantial apportionments will be given to. goldfield necessities. The cry that capital was being pursued out of the country is a patent falsity. Confidence is restoring, and restored, and there is every reason to believe that the people of the colony will not fail to give the Government further support. The elections are coming on presently, and there is every indication ithat the present Liberal administration will be entrusted, for another term at least, with the trust of the great bulk of the people of New Zealand.
