The Haqley Pabk Lake. — A meeting of the committee of the promoters of the proposed artificial lake in Hagley Park was held at the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon; present— Messrs G. Humphreys (in the chair), H. S. Bushel} (honorary secretary), Oakeley Archer, E. Foster, S. B. Seymour, Worsley and Way. It /was decided that the proposed lake should be named Victoria Lake, in commemoration of Queen Victoria having this year attained a length of reign greater than that of any other British sovereign. It is to be between five and six acres in extent, with a depth of about three feet, and the cost is estimated at from .£250 to J2300 for the sheet of water, and «£IOO for possible ornamentation of the banks. It was reported that tho members of the committee had visited the proposed site, the old running track, and were satisfied that it was admirably suited for the purpose. A Finance Committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs Purdio, Archer, Humphreys, Way, Worsley, Foßter, Seymour, H. R. Webb, Moore, C. Barker, Wayniouth and Professor Scott, who have undertaken to receive subscriptions. It , was decided that subscription lists should .be printed, and issued forthwith. The committee adjourned to 4.30 p.m. on Thursday next. The introduction of sugar into Britain is often dated as late as the fifteenth century ; but it was really in tiso there in the thirteenth.
