TROUT-FISHING.
♦ Further details of the opening day of the season are now to hand. A well-known Christchtirch musician landed thirteen very nice fish from the Avon. ' Other rods obtained 8, 7, 7, 6, 6, 5, 4. For the beginning of the season all fish taken were in very forward condition. The number of fish at present in the river is a tribute to the wise policy of the Acclimatisation Society, which turned out a large number of yearling trout at the close of last season. In consequence of this the Avon promises more sport this year than it -has yet done. It is to be hoped that the zeal of the junior anglers may this season be so far moderated as to permit them to return under-sized fish to the river.' This wholesome and necessary rule has not always been observed in the last season or two. The .Timaru .Herald says: — So fay as we have heard from various parties who- returned from the rivers on Thursday night, the general run of- baskets was'"" light, eigfij; fish being the largest take that " we" have heard of.. The weather is too. bleak, and it is said 'that a few fishcrmeri who started at midnight on We'diiesday" spent a fearfully cold night for really nothing at all. The rivers are in fine order, but contain too much water for good fishing to be expected. A week or. two should witness a welcome change.
