CHARLES GODFREY'S VAUDEVILLE COMPANY. Mr Charles Godfrey, the eminent London actor-vocalist, who has been induced to make a brief professional tour of New Zealand, prior to his early return to London, will make his first appearance at theTheatre Royal on Tuesday evening, under, the management of Mr L. J. Lohr. Mr Godfrey, who is an attraction to fill any theatre in the Old World himself, will nj. on his approaching visit be surrounded by a specially selected combination, of burlesque artists entirely fresh to Christchurch audiences. An Australian paper Enys: — "In Charles Godfrey there i 8 an essential vitality in everything he does, a naturalness and a big spark of human nature. In 'On Guard ' and ' The Seventh Itoyal Fusiliers ' he very successfully struck thu keynote of .British patriotism and started a wave of national sentiment, and it is no exaggeration to 1 say he left its mark in the minds of the public. No other artist has aroused such enthusiasm nor scored so heavily with the soldier and sailor. Once when Charles Godfrey sang 'Balaclava' in Portsmouth the veteran pensioners presented him with a wreath of laurels in a hall that was full of our lads in red and blue. Sailors even climbed the pillars supporting the galleries in their anxiety for a better view of the proceedings. The National Anthem and 'Kule IMiannia' came again and again from loyal throats, and the cheers of her' Majesty's fighting men of both services crowned a memorable scene, unexampled in the history of music and the drama. The box plan is now open at Messrs Milner and Thompson's. Mr Godfrey's appearances in New Zealand are absolutely limited to twenty-four performances, being six performances in each of the principal cities.
