Ambeblkt Town Board. — The following gentlemen have been elected without opposition aa Commissioners of the Amberley Town District Board: — Messrs J. G. Harris, Thomas M'Naught, Thomas Osborn, E. A. Rogers, A. H. Weeber, Jesse Wilson, George Winskill. Fiee. — A fire occurred yesterday morning a few miles from Geraldine, by which a nine-roomed wooden house, owned and occupied by Mr E. H. Templer, was burned to the ground. The fire originated through a defective kitchen chimney. The building was insured in the National Office for .£3OO, and the furniture in the same office for jfilOO. A few articles were saved. Stamp Dealers in Court. — At Timaru yesterday the Resident Magistrate heard a suit, John Kroon, of Timaru, v. T. H. East, of Christchurch, claim .£27 15s, for stamps. The evidence of defendant had been taken in Christchurch. From the story of plaintiff it appeared that he had bargained to sell defendant certain stamps. He sent him a quantity, and defendant picked out a number and sent the reßt back, but refused to return or pay for those he had kept. James Boulden, stamp collector and dealer, said he had compared the list with standard prices, and that defendant had kept the best of Kroon's collection. Judgment was given for .£22 5s and costs.

Fabian Society.— The weekly meeting of the Fabian Society, which took place in the Art Gallery last night, was well attended. Mr Abbott presided; and Miss Hookham read a thoughtful and carefully prepared paper on " Practical Socialism." . A discussion followed the reading of the paper. Bowling. — A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Bowling Club was held at the green yesterday afternoon for the purpose of making arrangements in connection with the forthcoming season. The green, which is in a very promising condition, is being top-dressed, and will probably be fit for playing upon in a fortnight or three weeks.
