BOROUGH COUNCILS.
STDENHAM. An ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last, evening; present — The Mayor (Mr J. Browu), Coun--1 cillors M'Lennan, M'Millan, Clifford, Muffett, Hadfield, Large, Caygill, Kudd, Hirtzcll, Billcliff. Manhire and Cutler. 1 : Mr G-. J. Smith, M.H.E., wrote that he took it that the Council wished the 1; 'amount of the lo,ah authorised to be .£6OOO. The letter was received. , Mr-N. K. Bowden wrote, complaining i that dancing was kept up till such late , hours .at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lincoln Road, that it was impossible to let the houses adjoining. The letter was referred . to the By-law Committee to report. , ' The Works Committee reported that , Messr3 Harnian and Stevens had requested the Council to undertake the construction ', of Burke Street at their expense, and the . Committee recommended that the request should be complied with. The Committee \ recommended that the offer of Mr P. E. [ Wright to let to the Council, with a purchasing clause, his land on the South ' Belt for scavenger's purposes should be ; accepted. The Committee requested . authority to accept an offer to provide, on ( favourable terms, plant for working the k new system of scavenging the borough. , The Committee recommended that tenders ', should be invited for renting the swimming bach for the season ending April 30 f next, on certain conditions. ; The report was adopted, with the 1 addition to Clause 2of a provision that the purchasing clause should be optional, and ■ .that the Council should have power to \ determine the lease at the end of any year. ' , The Finance Committee reported that ! during the last fortnight the receipts had ' been 2306 16s sd. Accounts amounting to \ ;£lO7 10s 2d-were recommended for pay- " ment. The balances of accounts were : — \ Credits: Separate account .£176 13s 4d, interest account .£779 18s ; loan account : ■ fixed deposit .£2500, current account .£2643 12s 9d, t0ta1 .£6099 19s Id. Debit: General account .£4319 15s 9d. • . '. The report was adopted. \ ; . Councillors Eudd and Clifford, who are retiring from the Council, took occasion to
thank the Mayor and Councillors and the staff for . the kindness shown to them during their term of office. The Mayor thanked the retiring Councillors for their services. Councillor Caygill moved, according to notice— "That the Town Clerk should be instructed to prepare a return showing the .attendance of Councillors at meetings of the Council and committees." He said ;he had himself prepared a return, from iwhich he found that but of a total of 41 [meetings of the Cquncil the Mayor had attended 41, Councillor Billcliff 39, Councillor < Clifford 37, Councillor Hadfield 41, Councillor Large 39, Councillor M'Lennan 37, Councillor Caygill 40, Councillor Cutler 40, Coimcillor Hirtzell 38, Councillor Manhire 40, Councillor M'Millan 23, Councillor Muffett 41 and Councillor Eudd 36. Councillor Billcliff seconded the motion, and was still speaking to it ; when the Council adjourned at ten o'clock.
