WAIMAKARIRI HARBOUR BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held last evening ; present — The Mayor (chairman), and Messrs Parnham, Horrell, Doubleday, Hiatt, Mathews and Hopkins. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Lissaman and Wright. Correspondence was read — From Mr Theobald, offering to rent malt-house section at Is per week. Accepted. From Mr.Blackmore, asking permission to allow the willows on the river bank, through his land, to remain till after he cut his crops. Agreed to. The Pilot's report stated that the detention of vessels (from August 1 to 12), Kestrel and Huon Belle, was through not being able to get out owing to the high sea and head winds. He sounded the bar on August 6 and obtained Bft in the south channel and 7ft 6in in the north: The bar was promising to become good after the late heavy freshes. During the month there had been 138 tons outwards. The Works Committee reported certain I improvements to the groins, &c, and referred to the danger there would be to vessels crossing the bar if the wreck of the Owake Bell was not removed. It was unanimously resolved to give Mr Sims, the owner of the vessel, notice to remove it. The finance report showed — receipts £5 and balance at bank .£4O 8s lOd. Accounts to .£ls 6s were passed, for payment. Mr Doubleday asked if it was true,' as had been stated in one of the papers, that a cesspool existed on a part of the Board's section. The Mayor said it was untrue ; the matter would probably be brought up at the next Council meeting. The Board then went into committee to consider the Waimakariri Harbour Board Bill, and, on resuming, reported progress.
